Things Are Looking Up

If there were a Minushi DVD in the works - and again, I can’t promise there is, because to promise it and then have it not happen would be just plain mean - but if there were; then today I might imagine I would be remixing Minushi’s soundtrack for 5.1 Surround Sound.
As with most things that I find befuddling until I actually dive in and try to figure out on my own, 5.1 sound seemed to me like it would require a studio at Skywalker Ranch to achieve. But in the same way one might, say, make a feature length animated movie on their laptop, mixing 5.1 is actually no great mystery. It’s kind of tricky working backwards from an already mixed 2.0 stereo soundtrack but I think the result will be worth the trouble… If, in theory, there were to be a Minushi DVD.
Fortunately all of Minushi’s sound effects were always created with a full spectrum of 16bit 44.1kHz sounds to begin with despite being originally destined for it’s low bandwidth online delivery. But you haven’t really heard Minushi until you’ve heard a Giant’s foot come down in a room equipped with a subwoofer on a DVD with a LFE channel. So if you’re working on your own project and its a web project, don’t limit yourself to compressed files, always think big because hey, you never know what you’ll be applying those files to one day.
Here’s the deal faithful Minushians; I’m the type who’d rather not say anything than to make promises that are not going to be kept. However, I also sympathize with the frustration of not hearing anything on the subject of a Minushi DVD for months on end and so I feel you all deserve somekind of update.
As things stand, I have not found a third-party distributor who I feel will give Minushi a fair shake in the DVD market - I’m not going to get into it more than that, but indie filmmakers who’ve dealt with small to middle weight distributors probably know exactly what kind of snow-jobs one might expect from this type of business. So - and I’m sorry it’s taken me this long to reach this determination - once again the DIY method seems like the best way to get things done.
That said, I hope (no promises, because I still don’t know all the obstacles that may arise) that a Minushi DVD will be available for online sales before the end of the year.
I often forget that most of the free world hasn’t seen Minushi’s third act which is a tragedy that has gone on long enough. More news soon.
Minushi held its world premiere on Tuesday July 10th at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal.
It was super to see my little browser window epic on a giant screen. I got to answer a few questions and feel like a little browser window big shot for about two and half minutes.
I must do this again sometime.

Okay! So here’s the status:

Minushi is in distribution limbo right now. It is in the courts of the distributors and we’re just waiting for the bidding war to start… Heh.

So, in the interim I’ve had a chance to produce some short documentary-esque videos which I hope will answer a lot of the questions I’ve received over the years about how I produced Minushi. I call the documentary:

“Details: Making a Movie Called Minushi”

It’s a little less enigmatic a title than “Minushi,” I know. But hey, it is a documentary.

The doc, divided into eight installments, will be released online (of course!) here on Minushi.com (“Making Of” Section) as well as popular video portals like Revver and YouTube, among others. I hope there’s something in these installments that will amuse you or maybe give you some hints in your own projects. Anyway, without further ado, here’s the first installment of “Details:”
